What are the rules for active and passive voice? Probably you are searching for it. Here in this section, we will define them. What is a Simple Passive Tense? 

There is a difference between active and passive. Following Examples should be kept in mind for active and passive voice

  • In all active voice tense, we familiar with the subject of the sentence.
  • Actually, in the active voice tense subject do something.
  • On the other hand under the Passive form subject is unknown to us.
  • We do not know about the subject.
  • Let,s suppose in some cases we have knowledge about the subject in the passive voice.
  • But again in passive form subject does not do anything.
  • There is something is done upon the subject of the sentence.

EXAMPLES OF ACTIVE VOICE

Have they not been reading this book since 4 o clock? (Negative plus Interrogative)
Present Perfect Continues

There are different rules of passive voice in English grammar. Remember in passive voice there is no place for Present Perfect Continues Tense. We have only Indefinite, Continues, and Perfect Tense. We exclude the present perfect continuous tense from passive voice. It is the rule of thumb. Always remember.  Now, we will take a deep look into different passive voice tense. Let,s start our journey.

Passive Voice Vs Active Voice

Sr# Active voice (indefinite) Use helping verb such as (do and does + first form of the verb) Passive Voice (Indefinite) Use helping verb such as (Is, are, and am + third form of the verb)

NOTE: As you noticed in the above example,

  1. we use the helping verb is, are in passive voice indefinite tense instead for using the helping verbs such as do and does.
  2. You also noticed, In Passive voice tense Something is done on the subject, i.e Apples, sun, and Fruit.
  3. While in the Active voice subject do something such (They). So keep in mind these rules in Passive voice tense we only use
  4. The third form of the verbs + helping verb IS, ARE, AND AM

PASSIVE VOICE (CONTINUES TENSE)

Sr# Active voice (Continues) Use helping verb such as (IS ARE and am + first form + ing with the first form) Passive Voice (Continues) Use helping verb such as (Is, are, and am + third form of the verb)

3 They are boiling the eggs. The eggs are being boiled

NOTE: Hopefully we noticed the following rules of active and passive voice

  1. In passive voice ( Continues Tense) use Being + Third form of the verb
  2. While in a simple active voice we use, is, are, and am + first form with the addition ing.

PASSIVE VOICE (PERFECT TENSE)

NOTE: In the above table we use the following rules of active and passive voice. In passive voice we use

  1. We will use have been and has been + third form while in the active voice, we will use has and have with the third form of the verb.
